Opening Remarks: Covid, Second Time Around

So I caught Covid again. The second time around wasn’t nearly as bad as the first. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have tested except I needed to know before going to another job I have working in a support position at our local hospital.

It started as a bad head cold. Lots of congestion and achiness. More annoying than anything. But I thought I better use one of those home antigen tests up in the cupboard.

Sure enough, the results came back positive. Like a no-doubter, a positive bright and bold line on the test strip. So it was five days of quarantining with lots of rest and liquids. Fortunately my wife did not catch it. It was a reminder that this pesky Covid 19 with the latest variants is still very active and contagious. I spent time journaling and also reading my journal entries from November of 2022 when I caught it the first time (which was much rougher). I am grateful today to be feeling much better. As the Elvin Bishop song says, “Sure feels good feelin’ good again.”

As Good As It Gets

Some people think there is a limit to how good something can get. Well, I say, yes and no.

If you live in the moment and stay present to all the possibilities of life then it may be that it can always get better. Or that at least there is more to be revealed and some of that is going to be positively good! Sure, when we get a dose of downers we may not think so. But I like to look at my life as it is as good as it gets–because it is life and it is great to be alive.

In other words, stop trying to top the last good thing. Simply enjoy life and be ready to do the hard stuff when the hard stuff comes.

Do For Others

One of the ways to feel good is to do things for other people. It’s an old recipe and it is true. We feel better when we get out of ourselves and our worries and anxieties and do something for another person. It is especially valid when the other person is in need of a helping hand or a friend.

As Good As Your Life Story Writing Gets

Considering your life story project, the memoir, autobiography or personal history, the writing work can be a lot of work and revising. That’s how it gets better. Some people are better at first drafts than others, but everybody can improve the telling of their story by rewriting and revising.

Having a good editor really helps too. A fresh set of eyes and some tips from a person who knows how to help you better craft your story telling is extremely important. Don’t skip out on this step. Self editing only goes so far; don’t be afraid to work with an editor.

All the writing experts agree that working with an editor is a vital step in the memoir process. And there are plenty of places to find an editor. I recommend that you don’t rush your choice. Take the time to learn more about the editing process and what goes into it.

That being said, you might want to investigate what Denis LeDoux, longtime writer, consultant, coach and memoir expert, offers through The Memoir Network
