Your Life is Your Story, Issue #227 – We Love Memoirs Day August 26, 2025 |
Greetings "Your past is your story up to now. The future is the story yet to come. The present is where you live with that experience, your hopes and your dreams." ![]() Your Life is Your Story Newsletter August 26, 2025 Your Life is Your Story, Issue #227 – We Love Memoirs Day From Tom Gilbert – Editor and Writer, www.your-life-your-story.com In this Issue: Opening remarks: Summer Concerts Featured Article – We Love Memoirs Day Featured Resource – Audivita Opening Remarks: Summer Concerts![]() Summer’s here and time is right for…enjoying live music! I have found it to be a good year for concerts. There have been some terrific shows in my neck of the woods. Seeing live music has always been something I highly enjoy. And there is something extra special about outdoor shows, at least when the weather is good and the performers are spot on. In the month of August I saw a couple of groups I’ve wanted to see for some time. One was Alabama Shakes and the other was the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Both groups have powerful vocalists and great playing. Concerts are expensive these days so a real bonus this month was seeing a free show with Chuck Prophet on the Plaza in Santa Fe. I’ve been a fan of Chuck for a number of years and I don’t understand why he’s not more popular. It’s not for lack of talent, let me tell you. This was the third time I’ve seen him live and he was touring in support of his latest album, Wake the Dead. Great stuff. Music and concerts have been a big part of my life story. Why a day to celebrate a love for memoirs? As noted on this Holidays Calendar website, it is a day to share with others your love for a good memoir, encourage you to read more memoirs and even consider writing your own. I can get behind that. Top Memoir TipsI write a lot about the importance of preserving our life stories. Memoirs are one way to do that and they give us more flexibility because you can write about a particular slice of your life. Memoirs often have a theme to them, such as overcoming great hardship, discovering your passions, and celebrating success and personal growth. An article I came across shares the top 5 memoir tips by writer Megy Karydes. Those tips are pretty much in line with what I have promoted with many of my articles about life story and memoir writing (you can check out my articles). Among the Top Tips I Concur WithFinding Your Universal ThreadFinding your universal thread means focusing on a particular theme that readers will relate to, rather than trying to write your entire life’s journey. Being Vulnerable Being vulnerable gets you off the hook for not having lived a perfect life and encourages you to be honest and authentic, warts and all. Partnering with a Pro Partnering with a professional can make all the difference. Maybe you are a great writer and can do it all by yourself, but I have found that even with a gift for writing you need some feedback. Editing, consultations, and critiques will make your memoir stronger. Read more articles at here. Featured Resource: AudivitaMore and more people are turning their memoirs or personal histories into an audiobook. Let’s face it, a lot of people don’t have the time or inclination to sit with a book and read it (although I still love doing that). But people will listen while doing other things like walking, driving, chores and so on.Turning a book into an audiobook requires some know-how and if you want to do it right then more than likely you will need the help of professionals. I’ve recently been working with Audivita as they create an audiobook for a memoir I ghost-wrote. I investigated them after some recommendations from a publisher and a few other authors. They did really great work with the recording process and they are both proficient and enjoyable to work with. You can investigate them and see if they are a good fit for your project by visiting their site, at Audivita Audiobooks. Closing InformationThat’s it for this month’s issue. Thanks for reading.
