Opening Remarks: Hot Spring

If you like to soak in natural hot springs I understand. It’s both enjoyable and medicinal. Here in New Mexico there are multiple places where you can enjoy that natural warm soak.

But there is another “Hot Spring” going on and that seems to be our climate situation. The Spring Equinox arrived in the Northern Hemisphere on March 20. That day in Albuquerque our high temperature was 89. The next day we set a record at 91 degrees! My thoughts were is it summer already?

For this edition of our monthly newsletter I have a hot topic I have written about: 5 Risks of Memoir Writing. There are many good reasons to write a memoir, but there are things to consider, too. I hope you find the article helpful.

Featured Article: 5 Risks of Memoir Writing

By Tom Gilbert

Telling your life story in a memoir can be risky. Risky because you are telling your story and likely revealing many personal and intimate details about your experiences, your thoughts, your feelings and more.

Being open and honest is key to a good memoir. You want readers to relate and thus personal and even private details about your life journey let others know that you are, like them, human. You undoubtedly have many good qualities, but you also have faults and personality quirks. You have probably made mistakes – who hasn’t? But what have those experiences taught you? And how can you, in telling your life story, encourage others to live honestly and courageously?

Memoir writing can feel like opening a window in your house and inviting the world to look in. Part of you wants the fresh air. Part of you worries about what people will see. If you’re 40 or older, you’ve lived enough life to know that stories are powerful. They can heal. They can also hurt. Therefore, it is worth considering the risks associated with memoir writing.

Here are five.
