Opening Remarks: The Halfway Point

We are at the halfway point of the year. June is always a special time of year for me, in many ways my favorite month. As a fifth grade teacher I love young minds and helping them learn and grow, but I also love the summer break. Those of you who also work in schools can surely relate.

Aside from the well-earned summer break, June ushers in summer and gives me a chance to slow down, take stock, rest and recharge. It occurs to me that the halfway point of the year is also a good time to assess how your life is going. Are you living it to the fullest? What about any goals or plans?

If you are doing any writing then the halfway point can be a tricky place. I hope you stick with it, because we all have a stories to tell and important things to share about our lives. But sometimes we get bogged down and start losing our enthusiasm. Motivation stalls.

One of the best ways for me to get inspired is to go for a walk. It is a very good way for me to do some “pre-writing” as well as to enjoy exercise and nature. I write about it in this issue’s Featured Article.

Featured Article: When I Walk

By Tom Gilbert - Copyright © April, 2018

When I walk I go to another place. Literally, of course, as in the places my feet take me. But I am speaking also of another place, a meditative and contemplative space, where I can think, reflect, dream and just be.

For me, walking is more than exercise. Surely it does satisfy that necessary movement of body parts. Staying fit and limber is important, especially as I age. When I walk, however, my perceived age is not my actual chronological age. Certainly I do not feel sixty-two as I stroll, amber or trudge the path.

The Path. Part of my purpose in walking is to be on this Path. Not a destination, instead a journey. When I walk I write. Yes, my head composes thoughts and reflections that often turn into prose. I walked about a mile and a half before sitting down to write this piece. When I walk I slow down. I take in the surroundings, breathe the air, and my sense of smell and sight goes to work.
